At the Taxation, Inequality and Democracy in Latin America event in Paris, ICRICT Commissioner Martín Guzmán examined how political choices shape economic inequality across the region.

He explained that when right-wing governments take power, they often drain the state of legitimate resources, favoring those who have already concentrated the most wealth — exploiting gaps in the economic and regulatory system.

Guzmán contrasted the recent political and economic trajectories of Brazil and Argentina, illustrating how policy direction determines whether fiscal systems serve the public good or reinforce inequality.
